Live 3D compass and GPS overlay on the camera feed.
DELTATEL is a Romanian technology company specializing in telecommunications&digital infrastructure and smart technology solutions. The company delivers innovative services for telecom operators and vendors , utility providers and public institutions across Europe.
Challenge
Field engineers setting up antennas or equipment need to know their exact orientation and position, but checking a separate compass app while holding a camera is clumsy and slow. Your challenge is to design an Android app that overlays orientation and location data live on the camera feed.
Core question & where you will work on
- How can mobile applications simplify orientation and positioning for telecom field engineers?
- You will build an Android app that combines a live camera feed with real-time GPS and compass data, rendered in 3D.
Activities & expected output
- Analyze the field workflow of telecom engineers and identify the main orientation requirements
- Research Android technologies related to GPS/location services, camera access, and device sensors
- Build a live camera feed feature using the device’s rear camera
- Overlay real-time latitude, longitude, and azimuth (0°–360°, with cardinal point) on the camera feed
- Render the compass graphic in 3D, updating live as the device moves
- Implement a clear warning when GPS signal or orientation sensors are unavailable
- Test the app using realistic field scenarios
- Prepare technical documentation and present the final solution
What you gain & practical details
- Hands-on experience in Android mobile development
- Practical exposure to sensor and geospatial data processing
- Experience working on a real industry use case, with mentorship and feedback from technology professionals
