The One Health Genetic Research Laboratory (Biomedical Sciences, School of Health, Polytechnic University of Setúbal) studies the genetic basis of hereditary deafness. You’ll help turn raw population datasets into visuals that make the science understandable to anyone.
Challenge
Researchers in genetics often work with large, messy datasets — spreadsheets full of numbers with no clear story. Your challenge is to take real population data on hereditary deafness and turn it into clear, accessible visualizations that explain how genetic alterations relate to the disease.

- How can raw genetic and population data be organized and visualized to make it understandable for a non-specialist audience?
- You will work with real datasets from human population studies on deafness and turn them from spreadsheet data into organized, visual information.
Activities & expected output
- Organize and clean a real dataset from human population studies related to deafness
- Learn and apply accessible digital tools for data visualization
- Build graphics showing the distribution of genetic alterations associated with the disease
- Collaborate on a mini-project culminating in a short presentation for a non-specialist audience
